(Video) LOST - The Constant / Desmond Phones Home
February 29, 2008 by polivox
Bravo to the LOST writers! Thursday’s episode “The Constant,” was truly an amazing chapter in the groundbreaking television show.
After two seasons (three years in our character’s lives), our tortured lovers Desmond and Penny finally are able to bridge time and space to speak to one another. Along the way we are witness to the depth of their love for one another.
The show took the week off from dealing with the survivors on the island and focused on Sayid and Desmond’s helicopter ride to the mysterious freighter off the island’s coast. It seems that leaving the island causes Desmond’s consciousness in 1996 to travel to modern day on the freighter and leaves him confused — unable to recognize Sayid or remember where he is.
It gets twisted and complicated, but it’s confirmation that our island inhabitants are trapped inside some type of time/space continuum.
Another great piece of mystery was that in 1996, Desmond witnesses Mr. Widmore (Penny’s wealthy father) at an auction where he buys the captain’s journal from the Black Rock — the slave ship that resides in the middle of the island. Seems like there’s more to that ship than we first thought.

The scene where Des calls Penny was a real tearjerker, in a good way. But the thing that I’ve wondered about most is Daniel’s experiment. It seemed like Daniel got the correct numbers from his future self who knew them because he got them in 1996. So, is it a free lunch paradox? Or maybe he would have figured them out without help, so it’s no biggy?
The writers of the show insist that they go to great lengths to avoid all threats of a paradox.
Daniel had the numbers in his book. Perhaps he figured them out in the recent past but not in 1996 and so to avoid wasted time, he had Desmond give him a boost in the past with his research.
Remember, Desmond’s experience was a by-product of the Island, so it hadn’t happened yet — technically and confusingly.
Penny had to answer that phone and become ‘the constant’ in order for all those things to have happened. Make sense? I’m not sure it does to me…the forums and posts are full of the same thing from fans: ‘best episode ever’
