Lost: Oceanic 6 Final - Now We Know…
March 13, 2008 by polivox
In tonight’s episode of Lost we finally learned the final member of the Oceanic 6 survivors.
But the news came with yet another twist and mystery to solve, but it also gave us a clue
as to a possible timeline for the Oceanic 6 survivors.First, here’s the Oceanic 6:
-
Jack
-
Kate
-
Hurley
-
Sayid
-
Aaron (Claire’s baby raised by Kate)
-
Sun
Warning:Explaining certain elements on Lost is very difficult. Imagine the confusion we die-hard viewers experience each week watching an episode and multiply it by 100. It’s near impossible to explain jumps (flash-forward, flashback and present) when they flow in and out of each episode in season 4 like waves on a beach. Bare that in mind.
We learn that Sun is part of the Oceanic 6 during a very complicated combination of flash-forward/flashback and present time scenes.
On the island (2004):
Sun is afraid of the supposed rescuers and convinces Jin to take her to Locke’s camp to protect the baby. Juliet tries damn hard to convince Sun to stay, and when it doesn’t work, she reveals to Jin (boy, he’s picked up English fast!) that Sun had an affair and thought the baby might not be his. This has the desired effect and Jin goes fishing instead of leaving with Sun.
Sun bitch-slaps Juliet (ouch! — poor Juliet’s taken some knocks lately) and returns to her beach tent. She believes Jin has left her for good. Jin enters the tent later with fresh fish for dinner (yum). Sun is overcome with joy. Jin forgives Sun and asks if the baby is his. Sun assures Jin that he’s the baby’s daddy. Jin promises that he’ll keep her and the baby safe and will never leave her. Oh, this is really sweet (never make a promise on that island).
Flashforward:
Sun is packing an overnight bag in her stylish Korean apartment. She calls 911 (or the Korean equivalent) because she is mongo pregnant (hint to timeline) and the baby’s gonna be comin’ any minute (ouch).
Cut to Jin buying a huge stuffed panda bear in a toy store while rushing to get to the hospital. When trying to get a cab, Jin is pushed and shoved until he loses his cell phone (crack!) and someone leaves in his cab with the panda! Jin runs after the curb — cursing at the thief and promising to kill the guy. This is a hint of the timeline. The new and improved Jin would not carry on that way, but the old gangster Jin would. This is not part of Sun’s flash-forward.
Back at the hospital, Sun has a difficult delivery and just before going under the drugs to deliver the baby, she calls out for Jin! He’s not there, but there was some weird-shady looking character hanging outside of Sun’s hospital room (did you catch that?)
Sometime later when the baby is home with Sun, a knock on the door reveals one of the other Oceanic 6 — Hurley. He has come to see the new baby and to escort Sun to see Jin (what’s that…where’s Jin?). Hurley’s well-dressed and mild mannered appearance in Sun’s flash-forward also gives a hint to the timeline.
Cut to Jin. He arrives at the hospital after paying through the nose for another panda bear. He presents the bear as a gift to a Chinese official. The Chinese official’s daughter has just given birth. Jin presents the guy with the panda bear on behalf of Paik Motors (Sun’s daddy owns that company). Hmmm?
As Jin is leaving the hospital a nurse asks why he’s leaving so soon? Jin replies “It’s not my baby.” The nurse assures him that maybe he’ll be a father soon, to this Jin replies: “I’ve only been married two months.” Oh my god! This is not a flash-forward, but a flashback prior to the plane crash.
Back to Hurley and Sun. We find out that they are visiting a graveyard where Jin is buried. In an emotional scene, Sun confesses her undying love for Jin, tells him that she named the baby the way he wanted — her name is Ji Yeon– and that she misses him terribly. It is very sad.
Did you catch the date on Jin’s grave? September 22, 2004. That is the date that Oceanic flight 815 crashed. These 6 survivors are telling some big lies, but for what reason?
Wow.

Remember Jin’s comment to the nurse as he leaves the hospital? He’s only been married for two months. Remember how he reacts to the man who steals his cab and the panda? He threatens to track him down and kill him. (That’s the old Jin talking!) It’s very obvious that we’re seeing a flash-forward and a flash-back at the same time, intertwined to trick us into thinking we’re seeing Jin on his way to see Sun, and that the panda is for his baby. I think it was an especially well-written espisode.
As for whether Jin made it off the island, we don’t know that yet. (I didn’t notice the date on the tombstone, though.)
Also, in the hospital scene with Jin, he says he’s only been married for two months, letting us know that it was a flashback. And he may not even be dead. Remember, as far as the world knows, the people who are left on the island are dead. Jin may just not have made it off the island, therefore, Sun would have to further the story that he’s dead.
